Onnit Alpha Brain was created with the intention to improve brain function, focus, mood, and to eliminate free radicals in the brain.

Alpha Brain is a type of “nootropic” (I’ll get to that in a minute) that claims to do wonderful things. It’s been talked about recently by celebrity Joe Rogan on his podcast as well as other radio hosts (Jason Ellis of “The Jason Ellis Show” is currently on this stuff as well). Not to mention several MMA fighters and even some NFL players swear by it. Plus… it supposedly can give you extremely vivid, lifelike dreams.

Wow… that sounds great, right? A little too good to be true maybe?

That’s what I thought – so I decided try out this new “brain pill” to see if it was all it was cracked up to be.

So let’s begin by looking at the company manufacturing Alpha Brain and what they’re all about.

Who/what is Onnit?

Onnit was created by its current CEO Aubrey Marcus to “inspire peak performance through a combination of unique products and actionable information”. Basically, Aubrey wanted to create supplements that increased the overall quality of a person’s life. We’re talking about improved appearance, increased fitness level, better mental function, a heightened immune system… you name it.

I’ve tried their other stuff before – and everything they make is high quality. Alpha Brain falls under the “better mental function” category, since it is considered a “nootropic”.

What is a Nootropic?

A nootropic is defined as being a drug, food, or supplement that improves mental function in any number of ways. They are also affectionately referred to as smart drugs by some people… nice huh? [1]

How does Alpha Brain work?

Alpha Brain improves cognitive function in several ways. I’m going to go ahead and list each active ingredient, explaining what it does.

1. Vinpocetine

This chemical, found naturally in the common periwinkle plant, has been shown to improve cognitive function by increasing bloodflow and getting more oxygen to the brain. A study in July 2007 (I’ve got links to it below under the sources) concluded that patients treated with Vinpocetine experienced improved cognitive function after suffering strokes. [2]

2. Cat’s Claw Herb

Also known as Una De Gato, this herb has been used for hundreds of years by South American tribes to treat any number of diseases and ailments. In addition, it has been shown to actually repair DNA. The end result of this is improved mental clarity by eliminating wasting/dying cells through the elimination of free radicals (the cells that can cause cancer, among other things). [4]

Fun fact: People who took Cat’s Claw herb while undergoing chemotherapy experienced diminished side effects from the radiation treatment when compared with people who did not take it. It’s also used to heighten the immune system of people with HIV/AIDS. [3]

3. Alpha-GPC

This ingredient is a parasympathomimetic acetylcholine precursor, which basically means it has the potential for prevention and treatment of Alzheimer’s as well as dementia. It does this by increasing acetylcholine levels in the body. [5]

In addition, it has also become popular in the bodybuilding world after researchers found that it increased growth hormone levels in September 2008. Growth hormone increases muscle mass by heightening your body’s ability to absorb proteins… pretty cool. [6]

4. Huperzine A

This is a chemical extracted from the Huperzia Serrata plant. Researchers in China found that Huperzine A improved memory retention in patients suffering from Alzheimer’s. It even increased memory retention in subjects that had no mental disease at all, even more so than some prescription medications that were being used in the study. [7]

Wow… look at all those words I can’t pronounce. So does Alpha Brain work or not?

I can’t speak for others, but when I tried Alpha Brain for 1 month I felt a definite improvement in mental function. I immediately felt improvement in mental clarity and my overall mood. After a week, I started to notice that I retained information better.

Maybe it was just the placebo effect, but I felt a significant difference in my day-to-day activities. I was definitely more alert and when you’re working late hours, overtime shifts, or are run down from a long day of watching the kids… you’ll take all the help you can get.

Probably the biggest, most jarring thing I noticed when I was on Alpha Brain was my dreaming. I’ll tell you right now that I rarely dream when I sleep. Joe Rogan spoke very highly of Alpha Brain’s ability to give you extremely vivid, amazing dreams and I thought it was total B.S.

Around the 3rd week of taking Alpha Brain I began to have dreams much more frequently and I could definitely remember them when I woke up. Keep in mind that these results are based off of personal experience and may not be typical for everyone. In addition, I can’t personally guarantee specific results (since we’re all different, after all).

Who should use Alpha Brain?

Alpha Brain can be used by anyone, young or old, to improve their cognitive function. The ingredients are all-natural and if you could benefit in any way from heightened mental sharpness, you should give Alpha Brain a try.

There’s a 30-day money back guarantee, so if you aren’t satisfied you can always ask for a refund.

- Alpha Brain’s active ingredients have all been shown to improve mental function in different independent studies.

- The ingredients are all high quality from all natural sources.

- In addition to improving brain health, Alpha Brain eliminates cancer causing free radicals with antioxidants.

- “Better” dreams. I can’t say this will work for everyone, but I definitely noticed an effect.

- Serving size is a little larger than I’d like.

- Onnit was actually out of stock when I tried to order this stuff, so I had to wait a few more days for it to come. To compensate, they gave me free shipping and an extra bottle though.

This is by far the best nootropic I’ve taken. I’m currently a med student (2nd year residency) and this really did help me way more than any other brain booster I’ve taken.
